Working group on Energy Transition technologies for the Military

The energy transition is a huge challenge for Defence, where ships, aircraft and vehicles require large amounts of energy and have a very long life-span. Within our cooperation with Eurodefense, EDTA participates in a new working group on this subject. 

Goal of the working group is to provide recommendations to the European Parliament, European Commission and national authorities of the EU member states on geo-political, military and technological issues related to the energy transition.

With our partner federation Eurodefense we establish this new working group on Energy Transition for the Military as a follow-on to the work Eurodefense and EDTA conducted on this topic in 2018.
In particular this new working group, led by Eurodefense Portugal, intends to look at the following defence-related topics during the next 12 months until June 2022. 

  • Monitor and identify new areas of scientific, technological and industrial development in the civil sector from a Security and Defence perspective;
  • Monitor the developments and activities in the domains of energy security, both in the European Union and NATO, particularly in the field of renewable energies, towards a “greener and more sustainable defence”.

More in detail the working group would like to address the most relevant of the following challenges within the scope of Defence capabilities.

  • Innovative synthetic fuels (alternative fuels)

  • The development of new climate-friendly technologies
